A reader recently wrote in with a great question about finding a food-safe fabric for making

A reader recently wrote in with a great question about finding a food-safe fabric for making snack and sandwich bags. She was specifically looking for a laminated cotton fabric that was eco-friendly. In digging to answer this question, I found a ton of information and a few ideas for the safest ways to make reusable snack bags that are at least semi leak proof. PSST! I recently ran across a pretty awesome-looking solution to the fabric proble problem! Check out the update to this post right here. “Laminated” is a fancy word for “covered in plastic,” and there are  problems with pretty much any plastic touching your food. Even if the lamination is BPA free, you can’t really be sure. The chemicals used to replace BPA in plastics are no picnic either. Some companies tout PUL or PEVA as food-safe fabrics, but I’m not convinced. If you want to read more about the trouble with PUL and PEVA, Karen wrote a great in-depth piece on them. We’ve talked about the trouble with conventional cotton here before, but it definitely bears repeating. From an environmental and human rights standpoint, conventional cotton is shady at best. It requires tons of pesticides to grow, which pollute our wate...

The 2017 edition of world’s biggest industrial exhibition, the Hannover Fair, drew the biggest crowd in

The 2017 edition of world’s biggest industrial exhibition, the Hannover Fair, drew the biggest crowd in its 70-year history. As usual, the event gave a taste of what is to come in automation and factory equipment, and highlighted the increasingly closer links between the automation and IT sectors. Digital twins, virtual reality (below), collaborative robots, and the cloud. These were some of the key themes of the 2017 Hannover Fair, which attracted around 225,000 visitors to the Northern German city in April. This attendance – up from the 217,000 who attended the last comparable show in 2015 – set a new benchmark in the 70-year history of the industrial megashow. More than 75,000 of those visitors came from abroad, with the biggest single foreign contingent being the 9,000 people who made the journey half-way around the world from China. There were 6,200 visitors from the Netherlands, and 5,300 from India. The theme of this year’s show was Integrated Industry – Creating Value. Once again, there was a spotlight on Industry 4.0, but this time as a practical reality rather than a theoretical aspiration. “Industry 4.0 is now well past the trial stage, and is already generating real ...

The Troubled Quest for the Superconducting Wind Turbine

Try to wrap your head around this: A slender tower stretches 100 meters above the waves. Blades, each one of them nearly 60 meters long, face down the briny spray as they turn about a 250-metric-ton nacelle at the top of the tower, which houses the turbine generator and everything else needed to produce electricity. That’s the problem that will eventually face builders of offshore wind farms. In general, bigger—more megawatts per turbine—is better. So wind farm operators have been demanding higher-power offshore turbines, and manufacturers have been delivering. The most powerful turbine yet installed, an 8.8-megawatt machine from Vestas Wind Systems, went up off the coast of Scotland in April, and bids for some upcoming North Sea wind farms were made with the expectation that 13- to 15-MW turbines would be available by the middle of the next decade. Such turbines could power about 9,000 homes while the wind is blowing. But though bigger might be better, without some equally big changes in the wind turbine’s core technologies, bigger quickly becomes ludicrous. A European Union project called InnWind calculated that if a 20-MW wind turbine were to be built with today’s technology,...

Christmas with a delicious twist: Viennese Christmas wreaths

Santa cupcakes, a frosty yule log with penguins and this fabulous red velvet layer cake – part two of Royal Wedding cake maker Fiona Cairns’ delightful festive recipe series  With their melt-in-the-middle texture, these wreaths are perfect to serve with a pot of tea (or a glass of champagne) any time over the festive season. Do make sure the butter is really soft and use a large star nozzle to pipe, otherwise you may struggle! Fiona says: For a festive touch you could tie a ribbon through the hole, but don’t hang them up as they’re fragile! Line 2 baking trays with baking parchment. To make the wreaths, cream together the butter, sugar and vanilla for about 4 minutes until really light and fluffy. Mix in the flour, cornflour and salt until combined and spoon into a piping bag.  Pipe about 28 wreath-shaped whirls onto the trays with a hole in each centre, then chill for 20 minutes. Preheat the oven to 190°C/fan 170°C/gas 5. Remove the trays from the fridge and bake the wreaths for 12-15 minutes until golden. Leave to cool on the trays, then turn upside down. To make the buttercream, cream the butter, vanilla and icing sugar for several minutes until pale and fluffy, ...

The Ingress Protection or IP rating is an important consideration during the selection of LED lighting

The Ingress Protection or IP rating is an important consideration during the selection of LED lighting products for any project. The IP rating reflects the suitability of the light fitting to specific environmental conditions in indoor and outdoor installations. The first digit of an IP rating refers to the level of protection against solids, including dust particles, mosquitoes, moths, or flies. The second digit indicates the protection level against liquid with the number also providing guidance when it comes to on-site cleaning routines using sprays or water jets. While dust resistance levels progress from 0 to 6, the water resistance rating is provided in a 0 to 9 range. In some cases, an X may be interchanged with one of the digits if it is not relevant to the requirements, for instance, IP4X. An IP rating does not correlate to vandalism or other physical protection from impact; a separate classification called IK rating is used for this purpose. Most indoor lighting products are not designed for water exposure as risk from water damage is low compared to outdoor lighting. While dust or insects are not likely to damage the lights, a dust cover will impact the quality of lig...

Seth Scranton, one of the original white settlers at the waterfalls of Spokane in 1870, was the first postmaster of Spokane. The first office was a double log cabin Scranton built as his home. But the post office traffic grew with the burgeoning city and the boom years of the late 1890s. The early 1900s created the need for central offices for the many departments of the federal government. A post office and federal courthouse building was constructed in 1909 at Riverside Avenue and Lincoln Street in downtown Spokane. The architecture was typical federal neoclassical, with granite stone in the foundation and the exterior clad in sandstone. It wasn’t occupied until 1910 and the post office didn’t move in until 1911. The interior featured blue-veined marble wall panels, white painted faux Greek columns and varnished wooden doors. The style combined Greek revival touches and utilitarian austerity. .galleria-container { z-index: 0; } .galleria-theme-azur .galleria-info-description{ margin: 10px 14px 10px; } .galleria-theme-azur .galleria-bar { z-index: 0 !important; } The expansion of federal government agencies during the Great Depression prompted a search for more office space in...

War on waste is off to a flying start: Theresa May leads praise for crusade of litter heroes

Theresa May praised Britain’s ‘litter heroes’ yesterday as thousands of pupils got the Great British Spring Clean off to a flying start. Nearly half a million volunteers are giving up their precious time to pick up rubbish as part of a month-long war on waste. Children across the UK led the way at organised litter collections around their schools yesterday in an inspiring display of community spirit. Pupils from Merchant Taylors’ Primary School, Liverpool, Merseyside, pick litter in the grounds. Sir David Attenborough and Chris Packham have also praised the campaign, and Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn called it ‘an inspiring initiative’ Today, adults will join in the effort by picking up waste at shopping parades, woodlands, supermarket car parks, beaches and streets. Mrs May and Environment Secretary Michael Gove led praise for the civic pride driving the Great British Spring Clean, organised by Keep Britain Tidy and backed by the Mail. The Prime Minister, who took part in a litter-pick earlier this year, said: ‘It’s wonderful that around half a million people have joined the Great British Spring Clean, supported by the Daily Mail.  ...
